Small groups are often used as intervention to support specific needs. The need for small groups are identified by analyzing school achievement, attendance, and discipline data. Data informs programming decisions including group topics and group participants. In a small group setting, school counselors provide instructions and activities to improve student success. School counselors must possess the necessary training to develop appropriate and effective small groups.
Using data from your internship site, develop an eight-session small group outline (plan) to support an identified student need in the area of academics and/or college and career readiness aimed to increase promotion and graduation rates. Your group outline should include the following components:
Target Group Population
Rationale for Group (Supported by School Data)
Group Goals and Objectives
Aligned ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors
- Session Topics (Sessions 1-8)
- Assessment Procedures
