Q1. What do you believe is the motivation behind the mother’s decision to tell the story “of the children who are missing, those whose voices can no longer be heard because they are, possibly forever, lost” (page 146)? How does this project fit in with the other questions this novel has been asking?

Q2. Critically reply to your peer’s response to Question 1, express your thoughts, add to the answer and give reasons as to why you disagree or agree.

“The motivation behind the mother’s decision to tell the story is because she realized that history keeps repeating itself over and over again. These children aren’t there to tell their own stories and people are not aware of these stories. These children never make it to their destination and will most likely be lost forever, never to be found again.

The novel talks about the children who were all lost and have since been forgotten. It is said that the children are aware of the consequences of defying the law, including the likelihood that they will remain undocumented like the majority of their parents or other adult relatives currently living in the country. But, this story being told by the mother is not about these undocumented hidden children. It is about the children who never even made it to the country in the first place. She says that this story is “of the children who are missing, those whose voices can no longer be heard because they are, possibly forever, lost”. This project fits in with other questions this novel has been asking, because throughout this novel, there are questions about missing immigrants and what happened to them. For example on page 25, it says “…maps of migrant deaths in the southern deserts, and a folder with dozens of ‘Migrant Mortality Reports’ printed from online search engines that locate the missing, which listed bodies found in those deserts, the possible cause of death, and their exact location.” This story fits in because it is a voice for the lost children who never got a chance.”
